Weill Cornell Multiple Sclerosis Center at Nyack Hospital
Nyack Hospital has opened the Weill Cornell Multiple Sclerosis Center, a collaborative effort between the Judith Jaffe Multiple Sclerosis Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Nyack Hospital.
The center offers multiple sclerosis care to all residents in the Hudson Valley area, eliminating the need to travel long distances to receive comprehensive care for multiple sclerosis.
"It is our continued goal to provide our patients with the utmost in service and care and it is through the collaboration between Nyack Hospital and NYPH/Weill Cornell Medical Center, that our commitment to quality treatment close to home is fulfilled," said Matthew E. Fink, MD, interim chairman of the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical College.
The Center's comprehensive services include:
Neuroimaging MRI with dedicated protocols for MS
Modern infusion suite with full-time highly trained infusion nurse specialist
Positron emission tomography (PET Scanning)
Rehabilitation Medicine, including Physical and Occupational Therapy in cooperation with the Helen Hayes Outpatient Rehabilitation Center at Nyack Hospital
Support and education
Community need is indeed the highest level organizing principle for everything Nyack Hospital does, and the minute the MS Society described its prevalence in our service area we wanted to become involved," said Nyack Hospital President and CEO David Freed at the Center's grand opening.
Timothy Vartanian, MD, PhD, director of the Judith Jaffe Multiple Sclerosis Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, said the organization has been spearheading several promising initiatives and is "on the threshold of research breakthroughs that will offer our patients a better quality of life."
The Center is under the direction of Jai Perumal, MD, a board-certified neurologist with additional specialized training in demyelinating disorders including multiple sclerosis. Dr. Perumal's research interests include analyzing disease phenotypes in MS and MS variants, MS therapeutics, and ethnic influences on disease characteristics. She is also a member of the clinical staff at the Judith Jaffe Multiple Sclerosis Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Perumal remarked, "Our hopes with the new Weill Cornell Multiple Sclerosis Center at Nyack Hospital is to continue to grow and expand the resources we provide to our patients with MS and other demyelinating disorders to include clinical trials that patients can choose to participate in and specific rehabilitation programs within a multi-faceted comprehensive center."
In addition to Dr. Perumal, the Center's staff includes Jennifer Reardon, NP. Ms. Reardon has extensive experience providing care, counseling, support, education and treatment services to patients with multiple sclerosis. A graduate of Yale University School of Nursing, Ms. Reardon is a certified multiple sclerosis and neuroscience registered nurse, and holds an advanced practice board certification. She is a frequent speaker on the topic of multiple sclerosis, presenting to both health professionals and the community.
